Windows-looking fonts in Ubuntu!

14 05 2007

Hi there!

I’m going to write how to make Windows-looking fonts in Ubuntu.

There is how the fonts looked before and after changes.

This manual works for sure in Ubuntu Dapper (6.06), Edgy (6.10) and Feisty (7.04) – both i386 and amd64, it should work without any problems on earlier versions also but I didn’t check it.

The first thing is to check if you have added “multiverse” repository to /etc/apt/sources.list :

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

You should have there something like this if you have Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty):

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty main restricted universe multiverse

If you don’t have those lines, just add them and save the file. (If you have earlier distro then Feisty, add the repositories for your version of Ubuntu – change distro name in this lines from feisty to breezy, edgy etc)

Now install the package named msttcorefonts:

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

And download the config file.

Extract the files to /etc/fonts by typing:

sudo tar xvjpf fontconfig.tbz -C /etc/fonts/

Now restart Gnome – Ctrl + Alt + Backspace.

Hope it helped You!

Greetings
